A beer gathering, one TV remote: getting started with HaloShort

At a family meal, the adults have a few beers, and after the meal it's the family's turn to pick a TV show. Someone is willing to watch short dramas, but as soon as they get the remote they hand it back, saying they're afraid of pressing the wrong button. HaloShort can start with a few actions around one piece of content, without explaining all the settings at once.

Pick the same piece of content and walk through it back and forth

First use the directional keys to move and see where the focus goes on screen; then press confirm to enter the content; next press back once to see which layer it returns to. These three actions all show visible results, which makes it easier for the actual user to understand the path than having someone next to them press a few times in a row and just play the show directly.

HaloShort supports these three remote navigation actions. During practice, use the same drama and don't mix in TV system settings; if unsure, look at the current page first rather than rapidly pressing back.

Find pause separately once, and take other features slowly

After entering an episode, look at the actual playback controls and figure out how to pause and resume. The confirm key may do different things on different pages, so you can't simply memorize it as "confirm means pause." When someone at a family gathering needs to open the door or grab a drink, knowing this entry is especially handy.

Once you can pick a show, go back, and pause, that's enough. Learn favorites and speed-up when you actually need them; there's no need to memorize all the options at once.

For the first installation, just have someone familiar with the device prepare it: go to the Emotn store and search for HaloShort, and check the compatibility conditions for your home's Android TV, Google TV, or other Android TV devices. After it's installed, hand the remote back to the person willing to pick something, and let them walk through it completely on their own—that's more useful than always pressing buttons for them.
